The gaming industry is one that has evolved tremendously in the past few decades. We went from playing with rocks outside of our homes to being locked up in our room infront of our computers until the early morning. The truth is, the culture behind online gaming is a very prominent culture and it plays a big part in the culture of young adults in today’s world. 

So why is it such a big part of street culture among the youngsters? Apart from it being something relevant that all youngsters can relate with each other, it also brings forward a language culture that most youngsters would understand. 

Just like we have jargon in the workplace, there are lots of gaming terms that only youngsters and gamers would use outside of the gaming scene. For example, terms like:

  • “AFK” : Away From Keyboard
  • “GGWP” : Good Game Well Played
  • “Rage quit” : Getting so enraged with a game that you end up leaving 
  • “Noob” : Someone who is new to the game 

Those are some of the common gamer terms you may or may not hear in your daily life. Sometimes these terms are not only heard while you’re in the game, but it may become a term that is commonly used in the real world. That is how the language culture spreads, when gamers use these words and terms outside of the gaming world.

So why is the gaming culture so prominent in today’s world? Well, there are a few reasons behind this. Mainly it is because of how easy it is to share and talk about our experiences online. Young adults and most people in general use social media platforms to share their experiences and vent about things bothering them. 

This makes it very easy for people to share about their gaming life since there are communities out there that are built to help them whether they are stuck on a level or don’t know how to complete a task in-game. When people from all over the world come together to share their experiences in the gaming world, people from outside the gaming circle will feel enticed to join in too. It’s a culture that is very influential because youngsters always want to feel included. 

So what sorts of games are there in the gaming world? 

There is a variety that increasingly grows of video game genres and sub-genres that are out there, which means that the video game landscape will continuously evolve to follow trends. The first most popular video game genre we always hear about is shooters (FPS & TPS). 

Shooter Games (FPS & TPS)


Shooter games is a long standing genre that was developed very early in the gaming era and has branched itself out into two sub-genres, first-person shooter (FPS) and third-person shooter (TPS). 

FPS games usually simulate a human viewpoint that shows what your character sees in the game. A few examples of FPS games that you would have definitely heard about would be VALORANT, Call of Duty, Apex Legends and more. TPS games on the other hand shows your entire character and surrounding environment of the game, like Fortnite and PUBG. Most shooter games usually split into the FPS or TPS gameplay, but there are some instances where they overlap. An example of a game that overlaps is Grand Theft Auto V. 

Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) 


MOBA style games are becoming increasingly popular nowadays as it showcases an online battle arena with an emphasis on map and resource management. It also focuses on real time competition between players in the game. 

MOBA games will usually prioritize team play and multiplayers. Some well-known MOBA games have AI-controlled elements but usually you will be playing and competing against other human players to win a set of conditions. 

This style of games is dominated by games like League of Legends and Dota 2 which are 2 very major games that are played by the younger generation.

Sandbox Games


The term sandbox is usually used in tech, but in the gaming world, ‘sandbox’ is associated with open environments, non-linear gameplay and player choice. The sandbox genre has now become an often played genre of games. 

In sandbox type games, players have less concrete goals and pathways to pursue. Instead of conquering an area or fighting off a boss, you will have a variety of tasks that you can accomplish in different ways. Players will be in an immersive experience, so that experimentation will appen with unfamiliar mechanics. 

There are many titles under sandbox genres like The Sims, Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto. These are games that mostly focus on designing your gaming world on your won, sometimes including combat, trading and exploration.
